The main difference between a "road" system and a "competition" system is the point at which they isolate the vibrations of the engine.
Road systems must isolate vibrations until idle, which is extremely difficult to achieve while controlling the movement of the engine and requires careful adjustment of the rigidity of the support. Be aware that the "road" supports are more rigid than the original equipment and can therefore produce perceptible vibrations. Competition systems have a isolation threshold of more than 3000 rpm, below which the vibrations transmitted can still be quite high.
This allows us to make the system much more rigid to control the movement of the engine at least, usually less than 3 mm (compared to 25-30 mm for an oem system). How do motor supports improve manoeuvrability? The engine and transmission are usually a mass of 200 kg and more swinging under the hood of your car as a pendulum on its original supports. There are two main causes of engine vibration, the engine imbalance forces and the torsion vibrations resulting directly from the ignition of the cylinder. Depending on the engine configuration, the vibrations caused by the engine imbalance can be in any 1 or a combination of 6 main axes.
Linear; vertical, lateral and longitudinal. Rotation; roll, pitch and yaw.
Some engine configurations are inherently extremely well balanced, such as in-line 6-cylinder engines, and some are very poor, such as the 4 in-line. High-cylinder 4-cylinder engines (2.0 l or more) suffer from a high vibration level that occurs at twice the engine speed, known as second-order imbalance.This often translates into a booming noise in the car that can be heard at high engine speeds. In many cases, engine designers have incorporated a balance (rotation of the shaft at twice engine speed) to cancel these forces. The v8 engines with a multi-plane crankshaft and a 90-degree v-angle are actually 4 v-jumps connected end to end. These are well balanced and produce low levels of vibration. That's why this is the most popular configuration for a serial v8.
A high performance race v8 with a flat crankshaft has the same second-order imbalance problem as a 4-cylinder engine in line.
